_Types of Rhinoplasty Procedures
Rhinoplasty can help surgeons give a patient a new nose that differs from their old one in several aspects. A narrowing of the nose length, changing the angle of the nose with the upper lip, widening or narrowing the flare of the nostrils and removal of humps or external distortions on the surface of the nose are all achieved by surgeons through rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty Guide
To be able to perform a surgery on the nose, the surgeons need to gain access to the cartilage and bone located within the nasal cavity. Depending on the way in which they gain this access, there are two types of rhinoplasty procedures: open and closed.
Open Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is believed to have originated in ancient India. During the year 1973, Dr. Wilfred Goodman first developed the method of open nose surgery. During this period, the use of this procedure was restricted to patients who were undergoing rhinoplasty for the first time. It was only after 1987 that Dr. Jack Gunter’s efforts led to the adoption of these same techniques for revision rhinoplasty.
Open rhinoplasty is the technique in which surgeons make tiny incisions on the outer surface of the nose. These incisions are usually placed in the columella region of the nostrils. The columella is the thin cartilage that is present between the two nostrils. An incision in this area allows a lifting up of the skin over the nose, making it easier for the surgeon to visualize the bone and cartilage structures lying underneath. This gives greater accuracy to the actions of the surgeon to create a new nose. However, this involves an invasive approach and recovery can therefore take longer. Besides, the major disadvantage with open rhinoplasty is that the patient has to bear a scar permanently in the region of the columella. This is a sore point for many patients who undergo the rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons.
Closed Rhinoplasty
In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are all placed on the inner surfaces of the nose, giving this technique the name endonasal rhinoplasty. Following these incisions, the cartilage within the nose is lifted out, shaped appropriately and set in place. Besides the fact that this type of rhinoplasty procedure does not leave any visible scar, this technique also has several other advantages. Closed rhinoplasty gives the patient a new nose with a more natural look. Also, the fact that lesser dissection is required means that the procedure is faster and there is lesser occurrence of swelling and edema following the surgery. The closed method of rhinoplasty involves a minimally invasive approach that is conducive to a faster recovery of the patient. This technique allows the surgeon to carry out the delicate maneuvering needed to give the patient a nose that is as close to the result he desires.
Revision Rhinoplasty
A nose surgery performed on a patient for the first time is called a primary rhinoplasty. However, in about 5 to 12 percent of patients, the changes achieved are not exactly as expected. In such cases, a revision rhinoplasty procedure may be necessary to correct such defects. Although the same surgeon may perform the revision rhinoplasty, in many cases, it is done by revision rhinoplasty experts who have greater experience with such correctional procedures.
